Argentina abandon World Cup celebrations as fan falls headfirst off bridge | Football | Sport

Argentina were forced to abandon their World Cup celebrations after a fan fell headfirst off a bridge attempting to get onto the team bus. The players had to leave by helicopter instead of finishing the planned route.

Millions of Argentine fans lined the streets of Buenos Aires following their triumph over France on Sunday. Many had to wait hours to even get a glimpse of their heroes.

But some got a little too close than expected. A video released by TYC Sports shows fans hanging off of a bridge as the bus passed underneath.

One supporter was seen jumping onto the top deck of the vehicle, despite the players clearly instructing him not to do so. Another fan attempted to do the same but only caught the back end of the bus and fell headfirst to the floor to stun the crowds surrounding the vehicle.

The bus halted shortly after at the Obelisk, where the players alighted and got into five separate helicopters. TYC Sports claims they flew to a venue in Ezeiza instead of continuing with the planned parade.

The president of the Argentina Football Association took to Twitter to express his disappointment at not being able to greet all the fans that came out to congratulate the team. Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tipa wrote: “They don’t let us get to greet all the people who were at the Obelisk, the same security agencies that escorted us, don’t allow us to move forward.

“A thousand apologies on behalf of all the Champion players. A pity.”

Tipa posted another tweet shortly after thanking the authorities involved for making the parade as smooth as possible for the team.

He said: “We thank the province of Buenos Aires, headed by its security minister Sergio Berni, who was the only one who accompanied the entire journey to the entrance to the capital without registering any incidents, allowing the players to embrace the Argentine people.”
